feels so good to be bad

I'm exclusively a lurker on tumblr, but everything you've heard about Kavinsky stans is absolutely true. tumblr.com/tagged/joseph+kavinsky is filled with the most persecuted, downtrodden, oppressed fans this side of Loki's resistance. They claim they don't glorify or whitewash Kavinsky's behavior, but cry for blood whenever Stiefvater calls him a bad person. They interpret everything Stiefvater says on her blog in the most negative way possible, tag their posts "fuck maggie" where she can definitely see them, and pride themselves on being the only ~accepting~ corner of fandom. They headcanon Kavinsky as the protective, loving pack dad for a gang who are sooo much more diverse and feminist (yes, feminist) and accepting than those dumb nerds Maggie keeps writing about for some reason. They think Gansey is a horrible violent oppressor and Kavinsky just wants love.

Of course, barring a few very nice exceptions, everyone on tumblr who isn't a Kavinsky stan is disgusted and horrified and doesn't understand why anyone would want to read about him. Which is a tragedy, because he's the best villain in the series by a long shot. He's equal parts sexy and horrifying, a Dionysian force of chaos who's fun fun fun until he brainwashes your mom into ripping your head off. He works as a villain because you can see why Ronan's into him, and that Ronan's just a few bad decisions away from crashing a nightmare dragon into somebody's car. Kavinsky has nothing to do with the main Glendower plot, but his motive of "I just want to fuck everything up (and also make out with Lynch)" is much more believable than Whelk and Greenmantle's vague "I have to stop their quest because I'm evil."

I can't see Kavinsky as anything other than a budding psychopath meeting someone he considers an equal for the first time. He seems to actually care about Ronan, but as soon as Ronan doesn't do what Kavinsky wants, he's back to the selfish, nihilistic behavior he exhibits with Proko and everyone else. It was really fun to get into that narcissistic headspace, because I do think Ronan gives Kavinsky new and exciting feelings that he doesn't know how to process. I don't even know if the fic works as a true rape fantasy (it's not my kink except in the aesthetic sense), but it works as a narrative device because for all his control issues, I think Kavinsky wants Ronan to be his untameable self. This is just one interpretation of that.
