I haven't done one of these in a while, so here are some rambling notes and thoughts on my Big Bang fic. It had a difficult birth, but I think I wrote the best story I could under the circumstances.

I wrote three things for fandom stocking: two little ficlets and a short one-shot.

Put a Baby In Me, Hockey RPF, Tyler Seguin/Brad Marchand, impregnation kink/awkwardness

untitled Rivers of London ficlet, Peter Grant/Beverly Brook, pain play/bondage/knife play

untitled Hockey RPF ficlet, Patrice Bergeron/Andrew Ference, Boston-area college hockey AU

And now a meme. Anyone on my flist heard me complaining a lot about writing burnout this year--it was partly real life stuff, partly fandom drama, and partly my own fault for signing up for too many exchanges. But I took a break from certain fandoms, and then I took a break from fandom altogether, and now I'm trying to figure out how to participate in a balanced way that doesn't drive me crazy.

I wrote eight fics (five Raven Cycle, three Hockey RPF) for a total of 11,319 words. The shortest is 682 (there's a 618 one, but it's an outtake more than a real story) and the longest is 3205. Not a very impressive wordcount, but since the fic that gave me the most trouble is less than 2600 words, it's probably for the best.

All told, this was a really fun exchange to end my year on, and I'm happy it got off the ground. My gift fic was for my home team OTP, and it's hilarious and sweet and full of idiot boys being idiots about each other. One of those fics that's fun because you can tell how much fun the author had writing it.

Resistance is Futile by teacups_masala, T, Brad Marchand/Tyler Seguin

Brad Marchand assimilates Tyler Seguin to the gay. At least that what he thinks.

Inconveniently, this coincides with the 2011 playoffs.

I did not manage any treats, sadly, but here's my assigned fic:

Touch Therapy, T, Tanner Pearson/Tyler Toffoli, Martin Jones/Tanner Pearson/Tyler Toffoli

Tanner Pearson is catnip for tactile empaths. It has its downsides.

This is not the fic I mentioned struggling with in my last post--that fic is something dark, kinky, and difficult that I still plan on finishing. The above fic is something I wrote in the twenty hours before the deadline, with no advanced planning whatsoever, for a ship I didn't offer.

Because I had less than a day to plot and write a postable fic, I made up most of the worldbuilding as I wrote, with only a couple basic ground rules. Quickie is a blood empath for the sake of a goalie weirdness joke (and because I've written another fic where Quickie has a weird thing for blood), but because it's right in the beginning, I had the whole rest of the fic to flesh out his abilities and his relationship with Joner. Ask me about any other kind of psychs and I'll come up blank.

I put so little work into the worldbuilding that I'm slightly amused by how much people liked it, but vague implications tend to work better for these kinds of AUs. But there was a lot of stuff that grew in the background of the fic, and Tanner is an unreliable narrator who can only think about his crush, so maybe I'll put together some tidbits from around the psychic NHL.

I just realized I never posted my shipswap 2015 fics. My gift was Not So Weak That I'm Not Strong, a lovely Nat-centric Steve/Sam/Natatasha fic with lots of good whump.

I wrote who's gonna ride your wild horses, as well as nocturnal admissions which is an outtake from "wild horses." Both are Gansey/Ronan with strong Ronan/Declan elements.

I'm exclusively a lurker on tumblr, but everything you've heard about Kavinsky stans is absolutely true. tumblr.com/tagged/joseph+kavinsky is filled with the most persecuted, downtrodden, oppressed fans this side of Loki's resistance. They claim they don't glorify or whitewash Kavinsky's behavior, but cry for blood whenever Stiefvater calls him a bad person. They interpret everything Stiefvater says on her blog in the most negative way possible, tag their posts "fuck maggie" where she can definitely see them, and pride themselves on being the only ~accepting~ corner of fandom. They headcanon Kavinsky as the protective, loving pack dad for a gang who are sooo much more diverse and feminist (yes, feminist) and accepting than those dumb nerds Maggie keeps writing about for some reason. They think Gansey is a horrible violent oppressor and Kavinsky just wants love.

I wrote two fics this year, so not as prolific as last year. I struggled with one for about three frustrating weeks, and I wrote the other in five hours on Christmas eve and posted it an hour before the archive went live. Not in the order you'd expect, either.

Come Here, Rude Boy (Goon, Eva/Doug/Xavier)

So I had an open-ended prompt, a recipient who loved kinky fic, and major writer's block. I was running Thanksgiving errands when Rihanna's "Rude Boy" came on the radio, and I knew I had a divine mission to bring Xavier LaFlamme getting spanked into the world.

As it turns out, punishment is an incredibly hard kink to write, which I should've known because I never find depictions that hit the spot for me. Too much awful behavior from the sub and there are actual hurt feelings. Too little and it draws attention to the artificiality of the scenario. It can be somber and filled with intense guilt and emotional vulnerability (which I find interesting but not at all hot), or it can be so fun and positive and "safe" that you wonder why they're bothering with punishment at all. Goon is a movie about the joy of clobbering people, and Xavier is such a massive shitheel that everything he says crosses the line. The fic needed to hit that sweet/violent balance that the movie hits so well.

I did eventually get it done, and I was pretty happy with the result. I think it pulls together Doug and Xavier's contrasting submissive tendencies (which are totally there in the movie I swear), and Eva makes a great laid-back dom with enough of a testy streak to make things interesting. There's way more d/s potential that hasn't been tapped (like Doug being a service top and Eva ordering him to shove her or Xavier around, unf), but considering the time it took, I think it's a solid effort.

this is a secret proposition, lay your hands on me (Raven Cycle, Ronan Lynch/Declan Lynch)

Months ago, I promised _coal that I would write Lynchcest for anyone who gave it the green light in their letter, but with blockage and real life business, I was pretty sure I wouldn't get anything done. Then I remembered the line in The Dream Thieves that I bastardize for my summary, and it all came together--violence and tenderness both being intimate for Ronan and Declan, how being the only person allowed to beat up your brother also makes you the only person allowed to patch him up. I definitely got my kinks all over this one, to the point where I almost tagged it whump instead of hurt/comfort, but I think (I hope) it's in character enough to work. I also have a lot more to say about various Lynches, so keep an eye out.

I received four great fics - one for Harry Potter, and three for hockey RPF (one for each of the rare pairs I requested, which was pretty cool). A nice mix of sad, spooky, and silly.

I wrote three fics, all for the Raven Cycle. Here's some commentary, because I like that kind of stuff.

One fic down, twenty-four to...fuck.

I had every intention of doing a blackout, because I'm bored and ambitious and it's ten months till next Yuletide. I decided I'd pick a kink I have an easy time writing (dirty talk) and bang out something just over the 500 word minimum as an easy introduction to the wonderful world of kink bingo.

LOL.

I'd forgotten how difficult short fic is to write. Dirty talk is normally something that I write way too much of (/waves to former betas) but this one was like pulling teeth (ha ha, hockey, get it?). Maybe because I was trying to frame not-sex the way I would a sex scene. Also, hockey player trash talk is a billion times stupider than what I wrote, so I couldn't shake the feeling that it sounded inaccurate.

All in all, though, I like how it turned out. I like that the prompt works in several ways--sexual teasing, the playground teasing of hockey chirps, the author teasing the reader with fade to black. I like that it plays with the darkness of hockey, and the violent, domineering itch it scratches (for me, at least).

I'll probably write the porny sequel, because I cockblocked myself and there isn't enough good hatesex in fandom. And while I'm not supposed to like the Flyers, Claude Giroux could bend me over any day of the week. Mm, yeah, mama's a dirty puck slut.

I wrote one treat this year, The Sword and the Shield in The Raven Cycle. I got some nice feedback, met some cool people, and wrote an underrepresented pairing with one of my favorite kinks. Will probably sign up for real next year.

Since I love hearing people talk about their writing process, I figured I'd put down a few notes on how this thing came together. I'll spare you a wall of uncut text posted directly to the Yuletide comm, though.

Overall, it was a lot of really intense, stressful fun, and I'm already plotting my requests for next year.
