fandom stocking + end of year fic meme
Jan. 11th, 2016 10:21 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I wrote three things for fandom stocking: two little ficlets and a short one-shot.
Put a Baby In Me, Hockey RPF, Tyler Seguin/Brad Marchand, impregnation kink/awkwardness
untitled Rivers of London ficlet, Peter Grant/Beverly Brook, pain play/bondage/knife play
untitled Hockey RPF ficlet, Patrice Bergeron/Andrew Ference, Boston-area college hockey AU
And now a meme. Anyone on my flist heard me complaining a lot about writing burnout this year--it was partly real life stuff, partly fandom drama, and partly my own fault for signing up for too many exchanges. But I took a break from certain fandoms, and then I took a break from fandom altogether, and now I'm trying to figure out how to participate in a balanced way that doesn't drive me crazy.
I wrote eight fics (five Raven Cycle, three Hockey RPF) for a total of 11,319 words. The shortest is 682 (there's a 618 one, but it's an outtake more than a real story) and the longest is 3205. Not a very impressive wordcount, but since the fic that gave me the most trouble is less than 2600 words, it's probably for the best.
January
Fortunate Son (RC, Declan Lynch/OMC)
February
boys and their toys (RC, Joseph Kavinsky/Dream Ronan Lynch)
March
Something Old, Something New (RC, gen-ish with canon pairings)
April
who's gonna ride your wild horses (RC, Richard Campbell Gansey III/Ronan Lynch, Ronan Lynch/Declan Lynch)
nocturnal admissions (same)
June
good dog stay (hockey, Mike Richards/Jeff Carter)
August
Being Furry (hockey, gen, Milan Lucic + Kings ensemble)
September
Touch Therapy (hockey, Tanner Pearson/Tyler Toffoli/Martin Jones)
My favorite story this year:
Probably Boys and their Toys, because I love how creative you can be when you write horror (The Washerwoman is one of my favorite fics of mine for similar reasons). And it's fun to stretch my dirtybadwrong porn muscles once in a while.
Most popular story:
Good Dog Stay has the second highest hits and the highest kudos, which surprised me--Touch Therapy has almost twice the comments of any other fic, and I thought for sure it would be the most popular. Good Dog Stay also has the highest numerical kudos count of any fic I've posted, if you take out my weirdly megapopular* Hunger Games fic. Boys and their Toys has the highest hit count but the the fourth lowest kudos, which I'm strangely proud of.
*My most popular fic by a landslide is non-penetrative Haymitch/Katniss I wrote for porn battle. It has almost three times the hits and twice the kudos of my second most popular fic, which is for a superhero megafandom.
Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Even the fics without a lot of responses got at least a couple really good comments. I think Fortunate Son has some damn good smut and emotional whump, but it pairs a divisive side character with an OC, so I can't be shocked it didn't get a lot of attention.
Most fun to write:
Boys and their Toys, hands down. Kavinsky's a really fun character, and it was great to see how horrible I could make it while still nominally being a smutfic.
Hardest to write:
Wild Horses/Nocturnal Admissions, which I posted about at the time. I said that the finished fic is like the collected porny bits of the fully fleshed out longfic that exists in my head, and I stand by that.
Easiest to write:
I wrote the first 80% of Touch Therapy in two days, so probably that. It had a straightforward plot and character dynamics, the "characters" were blank-slate enough that I could tweak them into whatever I needed, and the humor/fluff balance was easy to work out.
Sexiest story:
I'm casting my vote for Fortunate Son, because blowjobs and daddy kink. Blowjobs are my absolute favorite sex act to write, and I think this is a particularly good one.
Sweetest story:
Being Furry. It was my way of dealing with a player I've loved since I was a teenager getting traded across the country, and it's super duper self indulgent (platonic furry snuggle parties! purring big kitty piles!) but I have no regrets.
Saddest story:
Probably Fortunate Son. Poor Declan, nobody's favorite, having to get love and affection from skeevy gay bar bathroom hookups.
Truest story:
Probably one of my unfinished hockey fics set in Boston. I have one that's set during the mondo blizzard of '15, and another that uses a certain recent draft pick as an excuse to write about my college days.
"Holy crap, that's wrong even for you" story:
Boys and their Toys, not so much for the rape as for the murder and mild necrophilia.
Biggest disappointment:
I had a bunch of WIPs that I didn't get finished, and I would've liked to have at least started the zombie Gansey dark magic fic.
Biggest surprise:
I was surprised at the positive attention Being Furry got, since it was gen for a much-disliked team and featured Milan "piece of shit" Lucic as the main character.
Favorite title:
I'm pretty fond of Who's Gonna Ride your Wild Horses. I'm usually not a fan of really long song lyric titles, but the song in question is both lyrically and culturally perfect for the fic. And I never would have finished the fic without playing Achtung Baby and Joshua Tree on repeat.
Looking back, did you write more stories than you thought you would this year, fewer than you thought, or about what you predicted?
Way less, but that was partly because of self-imposed breaks.
Story that could have been better:
Again, Wild Horses. It wanted to be a Sword and the Shield-style, 6k slow burn fic with lots of feelings and poetic imagery, but it just wasn't happening.
Leitmotif of the year and the story that demonstrates it best:
Based on my hockey fic, cuddling and animal behavior. Based on my Raven Cycle fic, incredibly fucked up power dynamics. Which is funny because I'm always bemoaning the lack of fucked up power dynamics in hockey fic.
What's next for 2016?
I've been playing around with some original stuff on FFA, and I'll probably do more of that while I try to find my fandom/life balance. Also, finishing some of my goddamn WIPs.
