I told myself yearly recaps aren't late as long as they're posted in January. Oops.

I posted 23 fics to AO3 in 2024, which is the most fics I've posted in a single year since I started tracking my metrics in 2020. I think it's because I consumed a ton of different media and had an excess of creative energy, brain power, and free time, most of which feels totally out of my control.

I wrote for 11 different fandoms in 2024, 6 for the first time. The fandom I wrote the most is a tie between The Terror and Challengers, followed closely by another tie between Saltburn and Original Works.

I wrote 10 fics in 2023, which is a respectable 4+ over 2022. My expectations were sky high as always, and I failed to meet them as always, but it wasn't a bad turnout. I wrote only for exchanges, seven of them: six that I posted one fic for (one treat, three pinch hits, two proper assignments), and Battleship AKA exchanges georg. I wrote four fandoms for the first time, including two that I consumed specifically for a pinch hit.

If I post this before February, it doesn't count as late, right?

I posted 6 fics in 2022 (all for exchanges), the same number I posted in 2020. I was really disappointed with that number at the end of 2020, but I'm much less bothered now - I had enough real life shit bothering me in 2022 (and in 2020, obviously) that I'm happy to have posted even this much. With three years of hindsight, I posted some pretty good fic in 2020. In terms of how much I enjoyed writing fanfiction in 2022, I'd give myself a 7.7/10.

In 2020, I published 6 fics (5 exchange assignments + 1 mini bang). Although I liked most of what I wrote, I was disappointed that I didn't write any of the ships or kinks I'd been most excited about that year, and that aside from the bang, all I'd written was exchange assignments.

In 2021, I published 18 fics (plus 2 cracky fandom spreadsheets) across 9 exchanges. For me personally, 2021 was even more bonkers and unsettling than 2020, which resulted in ten rabid obsessive fandom hyperfixations in 2021 (I usually average 1-3 a year at most).

My 2021 fandom goals were more complex than I feel like going through, but my overall goal was to write more things purely for the joy of writing, which I definitely accomplished. I wrote an average of over 2 fics per exchange, I wrote at least six of my weirdest niche kinks, and I wrote some ultraviolent Reylo femdom. I'm pretty satisfied.

Now for my 2021 works (not counting my EAD Birthday Bash spreadsheets) and a fic meme:

Some 2022 fandom goals:

-Don't sign up for any traditional exchanges, especially full-length freeform exchanges

-Write and post two fics outside of an exchange

-Complete some of the media I'm halfway through so I can fandom without fear of spoilers

-Write some of the ships/characters I'm most inspired by while the inspiration is still fresh

In my year end wrap up, I mentioned that I didn't write a single treat in 2020; I actually hadn't written a treat since Trick or Treat 2019. I have since posted my first treat in over a year, and it's a joke spreadsheet.

I joined Exchanges After Dark (an 18+ fic exchange discord server) at the end of December, and a couple weeks later I signed up for their annual Birthday Bash exchange, a badfic/crack flash exchange where typical gifts include macaroni art, Lorax erotica, and spreadsheets. The atmosphere in EAD is delightfully chaotic and takes almost nothing in fandom seriously, which is what I desperately wanted from my exchange experience.

For this exchange, I created only spreadsheets and received only (o)possums. If you're like me and Going Through Some Shit, maybe bad possum fanart will make your day a little better like it did mine.

Speaking of, I have a discord! I'm even online sometimes! It's darkrosaleen#2516, if we've talked on here feel free to friend me.

I have nothing clever to say, so here's a meme.

What I wrote in 2020:

Fun Size, G, Bon Appetit Test Kitchen RPF, Brad Leone/Claire Saffitz, ~800 words

You're Twisting My Melon, Man, E, Oasis RPF, Liam Gallagher/Noel Gallagher, ~1300 words

Nighthawks, T, Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, Poe Dameron/Rey, ~1700 words

Sorry Boy, I've Been Hit By Purple Rain, E, Guardians of the Galaxy (Movies), Peter Quill/Yondu Udonta, ~1800 words

Tricycles, E, Bandom, Patrick Stump/Mikey Way/Pete Wentz, ~9600 words

Black Rose, E, The Terror (TV), Cornelius Hickey/Thomas Jopson, ~500 words

6 works posted, down from 12 in 2019. I only posted fic for exchanges (and one bang), and I only posted one work for every exchange/bang I signed up for (I picked up a pinch hit, but it was for an exchange I didn't sign up for so I count it as 1 fic per signup). I wrote no explicit het this year (which means no femdom), and wrote a lower percentage of het overall. I also wrote in 6 different fandoms, two of which I've never written before!

I wrote three things for fandom stocking: two little ficlets and a short one-shot.

Put a Baby In Me, Hockey RPF, Tyler Seguin/Brad Marchand, impregnation kink/awkwardness

untitled Rivers of London ficlet, Peter Grant/Beverly Brook, pain play/bondage/knife play

untitled Hockey RPF ficlet, Patrice Bergeron/Andrew Ference, Boston-area college hockey AU

And now a meme. Anyone on my flist heard me complaining a lot about writing burnout this year--it was partly real life stuff, partly fandom drama, and partly my own fault for signing up for too many exchanges. But I took a break from certain fandoms, and then I took a break from fandom altogether, and now I'm trying to figure out how to participate in a balanced way that doesn't drive me crazy.

I wrote eight fics (five Raven Cycle, three Hockey RPF) for a total of 11,319 words. The shortest is 682 (there's a 618 one, but it's an outtake more than a real story) and the longest is 3205. Not a very impressive wordcount, but since the fic that gave me the most trouble is less than 2600 words, it's probably for the best.
