(late) end of 2021 fandom meme
In 2020, I published 6 fics (5 exchange assignments + 1 mini bang). Although I liked most of what I wrote, I was disappointed that I didn't write any of the ships or kinks I'd been most excited about that year, and that aside from the bang, all I'd written was exchange assignments.
In 2021, I published 18 fics (plus 2 cracky fandom spreadsheets) across 9 exchanges. For me personally, 2021 was even more bonkers and unsettling than 2020, which resulted in ten rabid obsessive fandom hyperfixations in 2021 (I usually average 1-3 a year at most).
My 2021 fandom goals were more complex than I feel like going through, but my overall goal was to write more things purely for the joy of writing, which I definitely accomplished. I wrote an average of over 2 fics per exchange, I wrote at least six of my weirdest niche kinks, and I wrote some ultraviolent Reylo femdom. I'm pretty satisfied.
Now for my 2021 works (not counting my EAD Birthday Bash spreadsheets) and a fic meme:
Heart Extraction, Indiana Jones Series, Indiana Jones/Marion Ravenwood, sadomasochistic femdom
All Creatures Great and Small, The Terror, William Gibson/Cornelius Hickey, werewolves
New Love Grows on Trees, The Libertines RPF, Carl Barat/Pete Doherty, unplanned mpreg
The Machinery of Man, The Terror, Cornelius Hickey/Solomon Tozer, heartbeat kink & dom/sub
Treat Her Like a Lady, Bridgerton (TV), Benedict Bridgerton/Lady Danbury, crossdressing & feminization
With the Band, Iron Man, Tony Stark/James "Rhodey" Rhodes, clothes sharing
Cherries in the Snow, Captain America, Natasha Romanov/Steve Rogers, painplay/bloodplay
Blue Jean Baby, LA Lady, Guardians of the Galaxy, Gamora & Peter Quill, grief and memories
Judith Beheading Holofernes, The Borgias, Cesare Borgia, fem!Cesare
Not a Subtle, Manly Salmon, Stranger Things, Will Byers & Eleven, boys wearing HOT pink
Father Figure, IT (Movies - Muschietti), Beverly-centric Losers poly, Ageplay + genderplay
Do the Wild Thing, IT (Movies - Muschietti), Richie-centric Losers poly, werewolf puppy play
I wanna dance with somebody (who loves me), Stranger Things, Will Byers/Eleven/Dustin Henderson/Maxine Mayfield/Lucas Sinclair/Mike Wheeler, complicated poly relationships
The Same Deep Water As You, Stranger Things, Jonathan Byers/Will Byers, sibling incest somnophilia
Ghostbusters, Stranger Things, Will Byers/Eleven/Mike Wheeler, Locked Tomb fusion
Never Tear Us Apart - Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, Rey/Kylo Ren, Sith Rey femdom + guro
I Am the Passenger, Stranger Things, Will Byers/Mike Wheeler/Eleven, spooky Mind Flayer horror
Radar Love, Original Works, Legitimate Daughter/Her Illegitimate Half Brother, 1950s good girl/bad boy incest
Leitmotif(s) of the year
Take one character/ship I find intriguing + one of my favorite kinks and bust out a couple thousand words of self-indulgent filth (or other iddy nonsense).
My best story of this year
Judith Beheading Holofernes, because I think drabble constraints resulted in sharper prose and a more satisfying short fic. It's fun to write AUs in drabble series form, because you can take snapshots of the differences in the AU without having to string them together into a complete story.
My most popular story
I don't have one obvious Most Popular Fic across hits/kudos/comments/bookmarks, but my first and second place in all those categories are spread across my three MCU fics (Cherries in the Snow, With the Band, Blue Jean Baby, LA Lady) and my two explicit underage sibling incest fics (The Same Deep Water as You and Radar Love). My hyperviolent M-rated Reylo fic Never Tear Us Apart is the clear runner up. The perverts really showed up for me this year, either for my sadomasochistic het or my underage incest.
Story of mine most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
My lowest metrics overall are for Ghostbusters--it's a less popular OT3 in a medium popular fandom fused with a small fandom, so I'm not at all shocked this is on the bottom. But it's gotten some great feedback (including one of the WDLF picspam comments), so I'm not too fussed.
Story of mine the universe appreciated way more than I expected it to
The Same Deep Water as You. It has the 3rd highest hits and highest kudos-to-hits ratio, which is surprising for a rare underage incest ship in a fandom that doesn't seem to like underage fic and is past its peak popularity. But it got more attention than any other Stranger Things fic I wrote this year, so there must be an audience.
Biggest disappointment
The ship I fell hardest for this year was Mike/Will/Eleven from Stranger Things, and while I've written a couple pre-shippy OT3 fics for them, I still haven't written the magnum opus ship manifesto fic that's been rattling around my head for six months.
Hardest story to write
Nothing in fic land was truly painful (unlike real life, lol). I guess every WDLF fic was stressful at the end because I left all of them to the last minute like a chump.
Sexiest story
The Same Deep Water as You. Definitely the most sensual fic I wrote this year. I wrote half a dozen fics that were just self-indulgent loving descriptions of my favorite kinks, but I think this is the one I nailed the vibe on.
Favorite title
Tie between New Love Grows on Trees (the title of a Pete Doherty solo song about his doomed tragic love for Carl Barat, on a Carl/Pete mpreg fic) and The Same Deep Water As You (the title of a slow, syrupy, dark Cure song on a slow, syrupy, dark somnophilia fic between canonical Cure fans Jonathan and Will Byers). Honorable mention for Ghostbusters (a Stranger Things/Locked Tomb fusion), which still makes me giggle when I see it.
Favorite opening line
From Heart Extraction: "Indiana Jones looks good bleeding." Simple and to the point, and I defy you to rewatch that scene in Raiders with shirtless bloody Harrison Ford and not come to the same conclusion.
Favorite closing line
From Blue Jean Baby, LA Lady: "He had his mom's smile, so Meredith must've been beautiful." I like that it highlights how much Peter Quill's love for his mom shapes what a kind, curious, loving person he is, and I like the idea that the guardians get to know Meredith through how Peter talks about her.
Pairing/genre/fandom that I wrote that I never would have predicted in January
Hard to say, because all the new fandoms I got into were in line with my usual taste. I guess the Locked Tomb Series is an unexpected fandom for someone who doesn't like much femslash? I was also surprised that my favorite Stranger Things ships were between the tiny kids and not the popular teen ships. I actually shipped a lot of preteens this year, between Stranger Things and IT and my unexpected fave in The Umbrella Academy being Five.
Writing risks and lessons learned
I owe a huge chunk of my 2021 productivity to Morne (and to unemployment and new singlehood): the Creator's Choice of Fandom mechanic used in Bulletproof revolutionized the way I wrote for exchanges, allowing me to dig out a bunch of beloved fandoms no one in the AO3 exchange community ever requested. I wrote two favorite tiny fandoms for Bulletproof, two extreme opt-in kinks for Lucky Dip, and all my new summer fandom obsessions for WDLF Time Loop, gifting them to a bunch of beautiful risk-takers who really did want their requested tags any way possible. It was the most fun I've had writing for exchanges in years, and it's another unconventional format like flash exchanges that I'll keep doing whenever it pops up.
I also feel closer to the creative headspace where I can just, like, write a ship nobody requested just because I want to? I have trouble finishing things without external deadlines, which is how I got addicted to exchanges in the first place, but I had so much excess fannish energy this year that some of it could've been channeled into writing things just for me.
Some 2022 fandom goals:
-Don't sign up for any traditional exchanges, especially full-length freeform exchanges
-Write and post two fics outside of an exchange
-Complete some of the media I'm halfway through so I can fandom without fear of spoilers
-Write some of the ships/characters I'm most inspired by while the inspiration is still fresh
