I wonder if people who didn't read the book and weren't familiar with the story liked Part 2 a lot better than Part 1. The main critique I hear of Part 1 is that it's too much setup/exposition and it feels like a straight Chosen One narrative instead of a critique, but if you've read the books you already know that context. Part 1 has so much great visual storytelling and subtle character stuff, especially compared to the nonstop voiceover exposition dumps in the Lynch movie.
