Age play is one of only a few kinks I've been too embarrassed to write about, hence Iddy Iddy Bang Bang. I wanted to write it from the dominant perspective, and I wanted to write it with a sexual element, male sub(s), and no or minimal diapers. Male subs rule out most social media, no diapers rules out the gay male kink scene, and sex rules out most of the fic on AO3. As a straight woman, I'm used to society not catering to my sexual preferences, but I usually rely on fanfic and gay porn to fill the void.
In fandom at large, this is a very unpopular kink (based on exchanges from the past couple years, "DNW age play/daddy or mommy kink" the new "DNW scat/watersports"). In age play fics on AO3, sexuality is often treated with the extreme caution you would pay to actual children. Many author's notes promise that the fic is a safe space and there will be ABSOLUTELY NO SEX in littlespace, the adult sexual relationship is COMPLETELY SEPARATE from the age play. Comments on these fics often say that the reader normally finds age play a huge enormous squick, but this safe nonsexual version makes it cute and comforting.
I don't really care if people on AO3 think I'm a pervert, but this environment makes it hard to find fics that really understand the appeal of age play. For me, it's both a sexual and nonsexual kink, which means that surface level daddy kink doesn't scratch the itch. Age play is hot and transgressive and dirty, but it's also really cute and intimate and romantic.
Stories that draw a strict line between adult and little headspaces often treat the little like an actual child, and that removes a lot of the fun for me too. The reason this is a bandom fic is because there's something hot and dirty about littles who drink and smoke, littles with tattoos and piercings, littles who like metal and slasher movies. It drags the scene back into that transgressive space between child and adult sexuality, and that makes the whole thing much hotter to me.
This fic is also iddy because it wallows in the awkwardness of kink discovery, where someone starts out really shocked and freaked out and then gradually discovers that the freak was inside them all along. For all that I'm annoyed by consent discussions in fic, I love characters talking about what they're into and what turns them on. There's something very iddy about seeing kink dynamics in the context of normal life, and it's appealing the way real life kink can be appealing (although they should sound like real people, not a bdsm safety website). Fic kink doesn't have to be like real life kink, and often I prefer it to be different, but there's something satisfying and domestic about characters figuring out their kinks the way real people do.
