a brief list of fandomy things

I'm still really busy and really tired, so not much writing is happening. The Raven Cycle big bang mod has been MIA since April and never send the first check-in email. I haven't started writing my fic yet, and I haven't been in the mood to write dark and depressing things, so I probably will not write the fic this summer unless the mod gets their shit together. 

I wrote a thing for the recent kinkfest on the hockey fandom kink meme. It even killed a little bit of my writers block. So I guess I'm really writing for this fandom again? I might actually write something longer than 1000 words.

I keep plotting and drafting and scrapping entries explaining my complicated feelings about hockey fandom, but I'm in an emotional place where I can handle the Blackhawks winning another cup without wanting to break things, so I think I'll be okay dipping my toes in again. There also seems to be an upswing in people writing rare pairs and underrepresented teams, which makes it easier to avoid certain ships.

I'm only halfway through the Rivers of London series, but I can already tell the fandom is going to be a bad fit for me, because the further I read, the more I want Peter Grant being sexually menaced by every powerful supernatural woman he meets. And Peter/Leslie endgame. I really need to stop developing het OTPs in fandoms that are 99% one dominant slash pairing (cough, Kingsman).

Per my new icon, I've met Bobby Orr, and he is very charming and funny and still kind of a fox.

Sorry to hear about the flaky BB, though it is making my decision to stay away look better...

If you ever do decide to write that dark fic, I am still up for beta and brainstorming!

Soooo flakey. The drunk headcanon shit is still happening, but at least I think that's being done by different Second Secret mods (who have zero contact with the Second Secret mod running the bang...?)

The fic and the fandom in general are causing me more stress than enjoyment right now, so a break is probably good for me. At least five thousand words is barely anything if I decide to pick it up later :)

Ugh. Well, I hope you get your mojo back for the fandom, though I fully understand your disenchantment with the fandom. Also, I think it's great that you're getting back into hockey (even though I don't share it). But speaking of which, I dunno if you're looking for a place to live in almost-town, but a fandom-friend (who is into hockey, though possibly not according to your preferences :-) who I know primarily from The Eagle / Eot9 fandom is looking for a third roommate. I tend to flip-flop between fandoms when they start stressing me out, so this isn't new. And I'm getting better at just walking away from people having Totally Bad and Wrong Opinions about things. :D

That...might be relevant to my interests, actually! I'll shoot them an email, thanks for passing that along.

I would be very interested in hearing your hockey fandom thoughts. It's sometimes a hard fandom to love, despite all the adorable hockey players. And yay, writing! I hope the kinkfest runs again.

The kinkfest was a lot of fun! I was impressed with the turnout and variety. It is one of the more vanilla fandoms, and that can be hard to deal with, so I'm glad people are pushing the weird stuff more.

I've talked about my issues in other posts, but they basically boil down to me being a hockey fan long before I read hockey fic, and wanting different things out of it than people who came from other fandoms with no sports experience. There's a bunch of gender stuff, and a bunch of team loyalty stuff, and it can be hard for me to shut off the sports fan part of my brain and go along with the fandom norms. I'm also team #anyonebutthehawks, which makes it harder.

I don't have a problem with newbie fans, and of course people are going to pick up the most popular team if they come in with no sports loyalty whatsoever. But the assumption that everyone likes these two teams + the assumption that it's really mean and horrible to be negative about teams makes it hard if you have home grown team loyalties and rivalries.

Yeah, more weird stuff can only be a good thing, I think. (Of course, I come from SPN; my baseline for weird is, uh, pretty weird!)

Ha ha, I am also #anyonebutthehawks, so I know that feel. And I came into hockey by way of fic, so I can't relate as much to that frustration of dealing with hockey fans with a very different idea of fandom, but I could see how it would be hard to deal with. :P

I'll probably write a real post on this soon, because there's a lot of interesting social norm stuff that happens when you mix two very different fannish subcultures. I've always been into both, but I think they satisfy different needs for me. Sometimes hockey fic fulfills neither and sometimes it fulfills both.

My one blessing is that I didn't get into RPF until after the Blackhawks humiliated the Bruins in the 2013 cup final, because that probably would've soured me on it forever.
